	- have anti-virus software
	- when you choose to download a piece of software, typically you'll
		be given the choice to SAVE or RUN/OPEN the file.  SAVE is safer,
		because your antivirus software has a better chance of scanning it
		- just be sure you remember where you saved it!

	- executables (.exe, .sea)
	- compressed files (.zip, .sit)
	- programs contain usually an executable and auxiliary files
- how to install software you download
	- executable installers 
		- lead you through installation step by step
		- just double click on the installer that you downloaded (.exe)
	- ready to go executables
		- very simple computer programs that only require one file
		- not too common
	- zipped file archives
		- file that contains other files, like a folder or directory
		- but compressed
		- need special software to view them (winzip)
		- look for a README file, it will tell you what to do next
		- some contain installers or documentation files and the executable
	- self-extracting archives
		- similar to a zipped file archive, but no special software needed
			(its builtin)
		- double click it, it will expand and create a second .exe file,
			which is usually the installer or executable program
		- might also create a README
	- activeX installers (often not seen)
		- specific to IE and windows
		- was designed to make process as simple as possible - download and
			install in one step
		- because of its simplicity, great way to get viruses - be careful!
		- because of these risks, activeX programs can be digitally signed 
			by the creators
		- if your browser doesn't recognize the creators, it will ask you
		- IE will ask you if you want to install and run the program
			- do you trust it?
- spyware and adware
	- spyware "phones home" and reports on your activities
	- spyware that displays ads is called adware
		- usually by registering the product, the ads disappear, but the
			program could still be spyware
- file download utilities
	- winzip and zipcentral for opening .zip files on windows
	- stuffit expander for the mac
- software clearinghouses

		- search for shakespeare, as you like it,

- managing software
	- restart your computer as needed to recover RAM
		and speed up processing
	- optimize your hard drive (defrag)
	- keep device drivers up to date
	- don't load too many apps at once
