Downloading, Installing, and Running SecureCRT for Windows
Downloading
Visit OIT's Windows
software download webpage. Scroll down to "SFTP, FTP, and SSH."
Screenshot:
Right-click on the "Download" link for SecureCRT. Choose "Save Link As" or "Save Target
As" or whatever sounds the most similar.
Screenshot:
Save the file somewhere that you will remember. For example, the Desktop. Click "Save."

Installing
Look on the Desktop (or wherever you saved the file) for an icon that looks like the one below,
called "scrt" or "scrt.exe." Double-click it to run the installation program.
Screenshot:
When you see the license agreement screen, click "I Agree."
Screenshot:
When you see the welcome screen, click "Next."
Screenshot:
When you see the "Select Directory" screen, click "Next." (The default directory is fine, but
you can change it if you want.)
Screenshot:
When you see the "Select Profile Options" screen, choose either "Common profile" or "Personal profile" (it
doesn't matter much which one.) If you're confused about the icons check boxes, just check them all.
Screenshot:
When you see the command line tools screen, just click "Next."
Screenshot:
When you see "Ready to Install!", click "Finish." The program will begin installation.
Screenshot:
When you see the "Success!" box, click "OK." The program is now installed.

Running
Now that SecureCRT is installed, we can run it. Choose SecureCRT in the Start Menu (it may be inside
a menu), or look
on your desktop for the icon shown below. Double click the icon.
Screenshot:
When you see the "Connect" screen, click on "oitunix.oit.umass.edu" under "Sessions"
(should be the only choice), and click the "Connect" button.
Screenshot:
When you see the "Enter SSH Username" window, type in your username. This is the same
username you use to access your student.umass.edu email. So if your email address is
jschmoe@student.umass.edu, then your username is jschmoe, and you would
enter jschmoe in the username box. You can check the "Save username" checkbox
if you want to; then the program will automatically remember your username the next
time you run the program.
Press "OK" when you're done.
Screenshot:
When you see the "Enter Secure Shell Password" window, type in your password in
the "Password" box. It will show up as asterisks or dots; the actual characters will
not be shown. That's OK, just type it in normally. If you Press "OK" after you do so.
Recall that your password will either be your student.umass.edu email password, or
your SPIRE ID (Student ID).
You can check the "Save password" box if you want; then the program will remember your
password and enter it for you when you run the program the next time. It will not
automatically enter your password for you when you're interacting with OITUNIX from the
command line, (for example, when using pine), it will only remember it at this step
in the logging in process.
Screenshot:
If you see a greeting similar to the one below, then you're connected! Whenever
you see the prompt (looks like username@shell1:~$), UNIX is waiting for
a command.
Screenshot:
To logout from OITUNIX, type logout at the prompt. If you are in
pine or pico, you must exit those programs first to get back to the prompt.
You can then close the SecureCRT window.
If your prompt ends with a percent sign (%) (for instance, if it says
shell1%)
instead of a dollar
sign ($), then you need to run the first-time
setup command.
