ALL ABOUT OITUNIX You can learn all about OITUNIX here: http://www.oit.umass.edu/oitunix/index.html ACCESSING OITUNIX FROM A UMASS WINDOWS COMPUTER LAB - Login to the computer. - Open SecureCRT by choosing from the Start Menu, Programs > Internet Access > Telnet and SSH > SecureCRT. - There should be an entry for oitunix.oit.umass.edu. Make sure it is highlighted (selected), and choose "Connect." - You may be asked about "host keys" and things like that. Just click "Accept" or "Accept Once." - You will be prompted for your username and password. Provide them when asked. - When you see the welcome text and command prompt near the bottom of the screen --- it looks something like "username@shell1:~$", that means you've succesfully logged in. ACCESSING OITUNIX FROM ELSEWHERE - The first thing you need is a piece of software that will let you connect to remote computers like the OIT systems. This software is called an "SSH Client." There are many such programs; I suggest SecureCRT on Windows and JellyfiSSH on the Macintosh --- OIT provides them for free, so you can download and install them on your home computer. - Read this page: http://www.oit.umass.edu/ssh/index.html - Follow the links at the URL above to download the appropriate software for your computer (Windows or Mac). - Click "Get SSH Software." - Choose windows or mac. - Choose "SFTP, FTP and SSH." - Use the "Download" link to download the software. Remember where you're downloading it to! - Install the SSH software by going back to http://www.oit.umass.edu/ssh/index.html and clicking "Install & Configure SSH Software." Those webpages on the OIT site tell you how to install the software and get it connected to OITUNIX. - Follow the instructions for your computer (windows or mac). - The only problem you may run into if you're not familiar with downloading software off the internet, is *where* you downloaded the file to! When you download a file, it is saved somewhere on your computer. Generally when you click a link to download something, you're given a chance to specify where you save the file to. Remember this location (the desktop is an easy one to remember). When you're done downloading, find the folder/directory where you saved the file (or the desktop), and double-click the file to run it.
