Final paper

A final paper for this class is due the last day of class, May 12th. It should be typed, and approximately 10 pages long. We only accept hard copies. We are thinking of a paper with
a proper introduction laying out what the problem or issue
is that you are addressing. Set the problem in context by saying what is already known or believed about the answer, or possible answers, to the problem. Then zoom-in on some specific aspect of the problem. You could provide a critical analysis of what's been done already on that aspect of the problem, or you
could offer an original observation or hypothesis of your own. End the paper with a conclusion, summarizing your main points and perhaps pointing to what further research needs to be done in the future. After you've turned in your paper, how do you get feedback on it? The best way is for you to come and talk to us. Another possibility is to turn in a self-addressed stamped
envelope if you want us to send you the paper along with our comments. Feel free to talk with us about the paper as you are working on it. We are happy to provide you with more specific suggestions and guidance.

What is happening during the week of May 5

We'll talk about some of the most hotly debated questions in current linguistics: how do new languages come into existence? What do 'young' languages look like (developing languages, PDF 1.1 MB)? Are there universal design features of human languages? Do languages differ in 'complexity'?
