Managing Universities

Website Structure

The website for this class consists of two sections:

  • Public Pages

  • Private Pages

Public pages contain information anyone in the world can read. The following constitute the public pages for this class:

Private pages have information identified by student. This is information protected by Federal legislation that the public does not have a right to see. The Private Pages of our website can only be reached by members of the class who have our password. When you go to any of these pages the computer will ask for a username and a password. I will send you the username and the password with an email when we register you on the list and at the first class.

  • These pages begin with the Class Pictures. On the second class meeting, I bring a digital camera to class and take everyone's picture. I then put your picture on this web page along with your name. The purpose of this is to help the instructor in particular but also members of class remember who goes with which name. When we do email discussions it is often good to remember the person who goes with the name. If any student wants to be left off of the picture page, all they need to do is send a private email to lombardi@umass.edu, and the picture will disappear.

  • The The Roster and Schedule shows each student along with the student's email address and the weeks the students are assigned essays.

  • The Current Week Discussion Page has the essays submitted by half the class for that week that, along with the on-line reading, serve as context for our discussion on-line during the week.

  • The Past Weeks Discussion Pages hold the essays posted in the previous weeks.

Discussion List

The discussion list uses the email addresses you provide me. For this reason, I need you to have an email address associated with your name. No student should use someone else's email account for this class. Every student at UMass Amherst can get a free email account through the UMail system. Students may use any email account in their name to send and receive email and postings from this class, but accounts within the UMass Amherst domain (umass.edu) may be more reliable. Sometimes we have had difficulty with America On-Line accounts, but generally, anything that connects to the Internet will work. More information on the use of computers and the management of accounts and discussion lists is on the page at The Internet.
