Chapter 10 Thought Questions

  1. Is it appropriate to claim 19th-century concert musicians who converted to Christianity in this period as Jewish musicians?  Explain your answer.
  2. What were the differences in Jewish life between France and Germany in the 19th century?  Specifically, how did those differences impact Jewish music and musicians?
  3. Cite some important non-liturgical compositions of the 20th century that have Jewish content.  In each case, point out what the Jewish content is and speculate on whether that composition could have been undertaken by an 18th or 19th-century composer, explaining  why, or why not, in your own opinion.
  4. Select several avowedly Jewish composers of the 19th and 20th centuries and show what influence the haskalah had on either their careers or their music.
  5. Assume you are a music reviewer for Robert Schumann’s publication, Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (New Magazine for Music) in the late 19th century.   Write a review of Wagner’s book, Das Judentum in der Musik (Judaism in Music) aimed at the general European reader.
