Chapter 3 Thought Questions

  1. The chapter begins with a section called “A Turbulent Period,” which is then detailed in the following three sub-sections.  Explain why this period was so turbulent.
  2. On the one hand, both Jewish and Christian leaders of this period praised music, but on the other hand they also spoke against music and repressed it.  Why do you think they held two such opposing opinions?
  3. To what does the Hebrew phrase “Kol Isha” refer?  What were its musical implications?  How strictly was it observed?  Why do you think that was the case?
  4. If you were a Christian leader of the 1st-2nd centuries CE, what arguments could you make for incorporating Jewish musical practices into the new Christian liturgy?  What arguments could be made against it?
  5. What evidence exists to support the thesis that Jewish practices were adopted into the new Christian liturgy?
