In order to submit homework/exams in this course, you must:

1. have an email program with file-attachment capabilities
2. have Microsoft Word (97 or later)

3. set Word's macro-security settings to "low" or "medium"

For help on these matters, see below.

Microsoft Word

Earlier versions of Microsoft Word are available at very good prices (under $20). The following are links to web sites with price comparisons.

Microsoft Word Macro-Security Setting

Make sure Word's Security Setting is set so that macros can be enabled (at least at your discretion).

Otherwise, the special macros in the homework/exam files will be disabled.

To access this option, open Word, then go to Tools|Macro|Security|Security-Level and set level at medium or low; otherwise, the macros will not run.

If security is set to medium, then each time you open a homework/exam file, Word will ask whether you want to enable the macros. Say yes.

Special Symbol Fonts

Microsoft Word is designed so that special fonts can be embedded inside files, so that they show up even if the font is not installed on one's machine.

Unfortunately, this does not always work as Microsoft planned! It works on some machines, but not others. Based on student feedback, there seems no rhyme or reason as to whether it works on one's system.

In order to ensure that the special logic font shows up on your machine, you can download and install it on your machine as follows.

Download and Install Special Symbol Font (for PCs with Windows only)

1. Download Font

1. Right-click [here]

2. select "Save Target As..."

2. Install Font

1. Open the FONTS folder.

To do this, click the START button, then click SETTINGS, then click CONTROL PANEL, then open (double-click) the FONTS folder.

Download and Install Special Symbol Font (for older MACs )

Sorry, but there is no simple remedy, since older versions of the MAC operating system do not handle truetype fonts without all manner of special fiddling. I urge you to upgrade your system to OSX (OS 10).
