When you purchased the textbook for this class, you may also have received a code giving you access to a number of online demonstrations of psychological experiments, caled ZAPS: The Norton Psychology Labs. These demonstrations will help you to better understand how some of the key experiments in Cognitive Psychology were done.
If you want, you can complete some of these demonstrations and write reports on them for extra credit. Each report should be at least 350 words, and must be well written to receive credit. The report should summarize the logic underlying the experiment, including how it works and the conclusions that it leads to. In your report, you should explain what you learned by doing the experiment, and answer the questions posed for your chosen topic in the workbook that accompanies ZAPS. Your report must show some careful thought about the experiment and how it contributes to our understanding of cognition. You can e-mail your completed reports to psy315@psych.umass.edu no later than May 4.
You can also receieve extra credit by participating in experiments conducted within the Psychology Department. If all of your extra credit comes from ZAPS, then you can submit a total of 12 reports. If you combine Psychology Department experiments with Zaps, then see the syllabus for limits on the total amount of extra credit.
Your report should reflect a good understanding of the course material related to the experiment you have chosen. You may be able to write a better report after the corresponding topic has been covered in class and after you have done the associated reading.
Only some of the topics within ZAPS are eligible for extra credit in this class. Choose your topics from the list below.
